Social Etiquette of Smartphones - Where to draw the line?
Written by Shirley Kettler
In the 20th century, technology is obiquitous. Yes, people cannot seem to live without their phones which consequently results in multi-tasking. We often see people holding their phones despite where they are or what they're doing. But the question is, where do we draw the line?
So what's the vigor of this Smartphone? In a modern society, many people demand for the latest technology such as Iphones, LG Chocolate and Blackberry. Their innovations have the latest features such as 3G, Internet, Games and other applications that an average phone does not possess. These applications elicit users as they provide a source of entertainment on-the-go. Not only are they entertaining, but resourceful as applications such as the GPRS is provided to locate destinations.
Just a couple of weeks back, some old friends and i decided to catch up in Orchard Road for the new movie release - Iron Man 2. Of course, everyone would be on their earpieces connected to the phone while travelling. However, when we reconciled, they still had a single earpiece on one side of the ear while the having the other side hung lose.
Right there, i felt a sense of uneasiness. Are they really listening to what i'm saying? How do they concentrate on so many things at once??? They refused to turn off the music playing on their tunes list as they claim i could be heard. I guess Smartphones do pretty much provide a range of applications that could be SERIOUSLY addictive.
It is no doubt Smartphones dominate many sources of entertainment. However, we must know when to draw the line to prevent any sense of disrespect for the other party. Perhaps resort to your phones when you're alone and not when you're with company. Trust me, not only will it make your company complacent, but bonds will certainly be fabricated.
