Sam Chua - Social Etiquette of Smartphones - Where to draw the line?
Hey !
Where do you draw the line ?
How many times have you seen a person's eyes glued to the screen of a smartphone ? I don't know about you but i myself would be one of the guilty users nowadays. Just take a look around you on the street and you'll see the powerful temptations of a smartphone.
A smartphone is a highly advanced mobile phone. Therefore given the term "smart". Duh -.-
Compared to caveman times, smartphones nowadays can search the web anywhere and anytime. For an example, using the 3G function to log on to internet to access facebook. Some examples of a smartphone is the widely known iPhone or the stylish BlackBerry. The iPhone has the voice activation feature that allows the phone to identify and call the contact by voice. Once again, DUH.
The phone allows to manage and aid the user in his or her everyday life. To make things easier and better. Such as having music on your phone or saving notes.
However, the usuage of a smartphone has been sometimes been used too much and spoiled the original purpose of the phone. Many have taken out their smartphones during a conversation, a meeting, a movie and even during a class. For example it is rude as it is of basic social etiquette to give your attention to the other party. Using the smartphone in the midst of a conversation makes the other party feel left out and he or she would feel unimportant. During a meeting we should pay attention and give our best instead of taking our smartphone out and searching our mail. Though the phone enables this features and functions, we should learn to use it at the right time. If we use the internet through our smartphones, we should engage the other party as well. Such as checking his or her mail if he wants too, or inviting him or her to play an iPhone application game.
We should consider the feelings of others before taking out our smartphones. We have the rest of the day to use the features of the phone. Right ?! Some people would say playing with a smartphone while in a conversation would be anti-social. Which is true ! We should respect others around us. Just put yourself into the other party's shoes and you would feel like smashing that smartphone wouldn't you?
Here are some useful tips that we could follow. Head to the bathroom when you want to text. Try not to text unless it is important. Imagine you're on a date and you whip out your iPhone and start texting or searching the net. Your date would most probably think that he or she is too boring or irritating. It's a time to socialize and not a socialize network. In the Mrt, a friend of mine was busy playing the iPhone and there i was standing next to him and he felt like a stranger to me. We've forgotten the good old times.
