Animal Abuse
By Shirley Kettler
Animal Abuse is definitely not something to be proud of. We have all heard stories, seen pictures, videos and even come close contact when such scenarios ocurr.
So why do people still do it despite this shameful act? For some, people may detest animals and therefore try to provoke them to have some fun. Some uses props that can be found at the surrounding and play with the stray animals without knowing they were being harmed. Others simply torture these animals for they have no kindness towards animals.
One such incident was the case of a fine young lady using her high heels to pierce a kitten's eye. Pictures were spreaded through emails and those who came to know of it created a commotion to send the lady to court for justice. What was this lady thinking? Classy ladies aren't that glamouras after all.
We should all promote kindness to animals. Animals may come in all shapes and colours but even with such imperfecctions, they still have feelings like us human beings and we should spare a thought for every living creature. Inform the SPCA when you spot animal abuse. Spread the word to appreciate animals for what they are. Animals, after all, give us good company and spread their love for us too.

If you've not heard of the IPAD, then where have you been ! It's almost the top 10 used word nowadays among everyone. It's a magnificent gadget that everyone wants a hold of it.
Before the IPAD, the iphone was the big hit. With apple's famous iphone 3G and the iphone 3Gs, the IPAD became the "next level" for Apple. The IPAD is somewhat similar to a computer, only now you can bring it wherever you go with ease. iPad has a 9.7inch, high-resolution LED-backlit IPS display and incredible Multi-Touch capability. It’s thin and light enough to take anywhere. ANYWHERE.
With just the slightest touch of your finger, you can access pages through websites, write an email, flick through photos, or watch a movie ! It's really a "dream come true" gadget.
Thousands of apps were made just for the iPad. Right now you can discover over a thousand apps on the app store made just for iPad and if that’s not enough, you can also run almost 200,000 iPhone apps. What more could you ask for ?
The iPAD is really the best present you could purchase.

Floods in Singapore - Who should bear the responsibility?
Written by Shirley Kettler
Recently, a flood struck Singapore and not only did it happen once, but 4 times within 2 months. The flood was so strong that the water reached knee-high level around the area of Bukit Timah area.
To prevent such measures from happening, 780 sandbags were provided to shops leveled in the basement by placing them at the entrance. Moreover, Liat towers at Orchard Road were severley hit and have more than 200 sandbags around the building.
So who should be responsible for the occurence of unexpected floods? Because such disasters are unpredictable, i personally feel that there is no finger to point at. What can be done is to work on future precautions rather than dwell on who to blame. For instance, the MP is currently calling authorities to draw up an emergency reponse plan for these floods. This is a good measure to prevent future floods from occuring. Instead of pushing the reponsibilty to certain authorities, future precautions should be taken to prevent more lives from being lost.

Floods in singapore
who should bear the responsibility ?
the clouds ? of course not !
the truth is, no one is blame. can you blame the clouds ? can you blame the country ? can u blame yourself or the government?
It isn't any of the faults. It is part of nature. However we can think of ways to improve efficient protection against floods. Because of the recent weather, singapore has gone through storms and rains and even accidents due to the weather. such as a tree falling on a car because of the weather or even floods occuring in orchard, disrupting business activities. In orchard, floods have gone to knee level or even higher disrupting Starbucks business.
As singapore has a small land space, there is not enough space to build more reserviors or add in canals. The government is doing their best to aid in this flood situation. Everyone also has a part to play in the flood situation as well. We should bear responsibility as everyone has a part to play. To help one another whenever a flood situation happens to aid protection and safety among everyone.

Is there racial harmony in S'pore?
If yes, do you think it is based on understanding or tolerance?
Written by SOOJIN LEE
= Yes. I think Singapore is racial harmony country. So we called 'multi-racial country' When I came in Singapore first time, I sometimes felt like being in Europe or India or China or Korea. Singapore get together all of racial people at that much.
As time goes by, we can't live alone. We have to live in globalization. I think the reason is Singapore develope more and more, they always understand others culture and value. We have to understand others. racial is just person which comes from. That is not important thing in life. Those who have good personality and value is most important thing in life not racial.
If someone still discriminate others racial, I hope them to change their minds soon. Racial is not important while we live in. What we live in together like harmony are good for us and country also.

Is privacy still relevant given today's hyper-connected world of online social networking??
written by SOOJIN LEE
= Yes. The more technology develop like facebook and twitter, the more our privacy is relevant. It's easy to be relevant our privacy through online like twitter and facebook.
But we can't live without using online like facebook and twitter. Online is a part of our lives. So we have to protect our private information. Sometimes, some people were injured by exposing their privacy. As for Korea, it's easy to expose people's privacy through online. Especially, most of entertainments like actor, actress and singers.
Sometimes, some of people tend to expose their privacy informations and feelings too much. So We use to careful while we protect our privacy by ourselves.

Is there racial harmony in Singapore?
Written by Shirley Kettler
In Singapore's context, racial harmony is especially important because Singapore is a multi-racial country. We have the Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. Each of us play an important role. No less.
In Singapore, the government ensures that there is an equal amount of races in each district. For instance, HDB Flats. An equal amount of races are segregated into different housing estates for different races to bond and not have monopoly of a certain race as it might arouse racism towards another estate. Not only does this apply to HDB estates but the government has also encouraged CCA's, National Service and other opportunities to allow different races of people to build and create bonds.
However, many people are still prejudice against one another. When disputes arouse, instead of looking at the actual problem, some judge one another based on their races and start making assumptions.
Is there still racial harmony in Singapore? I personally feel that this is only our decision to make because everyone has a different point of view. However, i think that there should be racial harmony in Singapore because when we start to put aside our differences, that's when Singapore works best together. Just like the Singapore pledge, "We the people of Singapore. Pledge ourselves with one united people regardless of race, language or religion."

Is privacy still relevant given today's hyper-connected world of online social networking?
Written by Shirley Kettler
Given today's society, privacy can be obtained by simply changing the settings of a certain network. For instance, bloggers. Those who own an online shopping website may blacklist customers who do not make payment on time or simply refuse to pay up.
Another example would be social networking websites such as Facebook. Facebook profiles can only be viewed if an individual is shown in their list of friends. However, some people do not bother changing their profile settings to a private mode. This reveals information about a person be it their gender, education, and even whereabouts. These are the people who feel that privacy is no longer relevant.
So is privacy really important? This depends on the individual. It is up to them to decide whether or not they would like strangers to view their profiles. However, at the end of the day, one should always be careful and not leave the unknown with too much information or trouble may arise.

Is there Racial Harmony in Singapore?
Happy Racial Harmony Day ! That statement alone kind of proves that there is atleast some sort of racial harmony in Singapore, doesnt it? I mean i feel that there is racial harmony. I myself have friends of many races. We hang out together, talk about our problems and joy and we do not bother about each other's race. Sure at times certain insults toward their races would come out but we mean no harm. It is just a couple of kids playing with each other. Since the children are already educated about racial harmony, it wouldnt be a problem for the future generations because these kids would teach their kids and go on and on and on. So, Racial Harmony would last forever in this tiny island
However, this is just one side of the coin. There are also certain people that dislike other races because of certain events that they may have encountered. But overall, the majority of Singaporeans are alright with each other so YES there is racial harmony !

is there racial harmony in s'pore?
Yes believe or not there is racial harmony in singapore. BELIEVE IT !
Many singaporeans are actually related to an individual of another race. Schools, neighbourhood, events and activities all complile into a mix of races.
Other organisations, communities and government have organised certain events to promote racial harmony. This is based on understanding each other. That we are all part of one nation and we are all equal. So what if they're of different races ? we are still the same. Tolerance is another thing where we just tolerate for the heck of it. which singapore fortunately does not possess. We practice racial harmony and to tell you the truth, we are pretty good at it (:
We want to know people more even if they are from a different race. we don't just promote racial harmony upon tolerance because we really do care about each other. Understanding that each and everyone is equal and there should be no line drawn between each other. Events such as national day or communities setting up events where participants are from all different races. Schools consist of students of different races as well. This promotes racial harmony on knowing and understanding each other better.

Is privacy still relevant given today's hyper-connected world of online social networking?
With new social-networking applications like Facebook and Twitter, some people question if privacy is still relevant. Facebook users all over the world post pictures, comments, videos about their lifes. To as lame as posting about what they had for lunch to posting about how much they love their lover. All these are considered as privacy. But with such applications around, is privacy relevant? I myself use Facebook but i still feel that privacy is really important. Privacy is something then u should cherish. You would be like an open book if you think privacy is stupid.
But come to think of it, it actually sounds pretty good. I mean, everyone would then be able to know how you feel. You would keep nothing to yourself. Then, your close friends would be able to console you if you are feeling down and they can share your joy when you are happy. But i still feel that some things are better to remain personal. Your love life is one such personal thing. Yeah, its kinda awesome if you see pictures of your friend kissing/hugging his or her beau. But it may also be a real turn off for certain people. A recent stompper posted that he was particularly disturbed when he saw a picture of a girl hugging her boyfriend in MacDonalds. They were merely hugging and he already posted it online to show his anger. If they kissed he would probably go to the police. So, my opinion is that YES privacy is still relevant even though i loveeee facebook !!!

The 2010 WorldCup was a very major event around this blue marble. It affects people in various ways. But the question here is, how does it affect office/ School's productivity?
Well, different people have different views on this question. Some feel that it is good for office/school productivity but others feel that it is bad. Personally, i feel that it COULD have a bad affect on the productivity because the WorldCup this year was broadcasted in Singapore at weird timings where normal people are already asleep. Many of the matches were showed at like 2.30 in the morning. It is for office/school productivity because the students would be dead beat while in school because of their lack of sleep. Also, the students would all be so engrossed in the WorldCup that they may neglect their studies. In class, the students would just chat about the WorldCup rather then listen to their teachers. Different people take it differently. Some people have terrible time management so they are in a terrible position with the WorldCup on air.
For the working class people, i believe that they would be able to manage their time because they are older and have more experience in such cases. However, the adults have another problem. Gambling. Gambling is an addiction and some of them may have this problem. So it could affect their work productivity in ways because they may be all emo and sad if they lose. Also, they may bet big so they borrow from illegal lenders, the loansharks !!! If they fail to make payment, the loanshark would harrass them, thus affecting their work productivity !

Many people still respect the whole idea of privacy. Others are aware and concerned about the possible intrusion of their personal information or privacy.
However it's really up to you.
Some people don't mind too much on their privacy. Such as facebook where others are able to view your personal information and when even added as friends on facebook, other parties are able to view your friends, your recent activities and such.
Though with being hyper connected, it has it's benefits such as communication where there is a high level of communication. Individuals can contact one another through the web. Still being able to be in contact even if they were miles apart.
However privacy is still relevant. We still have to respect one another's privacy and space. Such as through the web, where information has to be limited and privacy has to be maintained. It is indeed risky with today's hyper connected world of online social networking. A few celebrities have been ashamed through such things. Photos have been leaked, even recent personal activities have been leaked through the online social networking system. Through the web , it can spread recent celebrities dating which the celebrities would have wanted to be of a low profile instead. Photos leaked on the web has been happening recently and it has damaged the pride and dignity of individuals. Respect and privacy are still needed to be of top priority in such online social networking. There's even webcam functions. Even the on and off button are the limits of privacy where it's up to the individual to view his or her privacy to whoever.
Today's online social networking has it's limits but it has proven wrong usage of it such as leakage of privacy and personal information. Privacy should be respected more not just being relevant.

WorldCup 2010 - Does it promote social ills such as gambling addiction?
Written by Shirley Kettler
The WorldCup fever has been going on for weeks now. For soccer fans, this is their time to take some time off to relax and watch their favourite games. However, for some people, it is not simply watching their favourite games. Some place bets on countries they think that would win the would cup and earn extra finance out of it.
This is definitely illegal. On top of that, these people only care about winning money and had forgotten all the basic rules. Addiction is one thing, but one trap always leads to another. Influence also comes in. One may influence the rest of their friends or relatives to bet on the game together with them and perhaps eventually everyone could split the winnings. Tempting huh? Of course, but what are the consequences?
On the negative force, social ills are created and people could go into heavy debt because of the addiction. This addiction may not only occur during world cup seasons because when one has ran out of cash to pay for their debts, they may turn to loansharks, bankloans and other solutions that may cause them to be in even HEAVIER in debt.

How does it affect office/ School's productivity?
written by SOOJIN LEE
World Cup held on 11th June 2010. Match are still proceeding. Most of people in the world are interested in World cup. Win a team in World cup is very proud of their own country. Winning in World cup means a symbol of country's power. World cup is very important to all people in the world as much.
So, How does it affect office/school's productivity? I saw the news on internet. Brazil fan who is 18 years old killed himself after Brazil defeated match. I was shocked after I saw this article. I think Brazil was the favorite for the championship. Most of Brazil people were expected to win the match. But they were defeated. So he killed himself accidentally. World cup have an affect on people in the world.
As for Korea, most of korean people also are interested in World cup. So they get together on the street and in a park to give support Korean team. During match Korea vs Argentina, that match started 2:30am. But most of Korean who include students and officers watched live match even though they didn't sleep. In 2002, Korea was crazy about world cup. Becuas Korea team went to semifinals at that time. Most of school and office stopped temporarily to enjoy pleasure at that time.
World cup have an affect a whole thing in the world. I think world cup has powerful thing in the world. So we can't prevent world cup affection to people and country. We enjoy world cup for a month while controlling ourselves.

worldcup2010 !
-how does it affect school/office productivity ?
This year's world cup 2010 was held at South Africa. The craze however was not contained in South Africa only, it was basically everyone who had a passion for soccer. You could see people buying jerseys, changing their wallpapers, changing their room wallpapers and etc.
However, the craze could do a little damage.Such as at work or at the office. Even in school, students are checking up on the papers and their smartphones to keep them updated on the latest actions that's been going around such as injuries or starting line ups. Those who couldn't stay up to watch the match would often check their smartphones or other resources to find out the match scores, even in class or anywhere they are, they just want to know the results wherever they are. This would result in the lack of concentration and it would not show good productivity in their work in school.
what about those who actually stayed up for the match?
this would also result in lack of concentration and poor effectiveness in their work, it's actually worse off than those who didn't stay up.
Though they enjoyed the live match they watched but they are dreading the heavy eyes and the weak tired bodies. During classes, they struggle staying awake due to the lack of sleep and it also affects our health. Not being able to stay awake would cause students not to listen in class and do badly in the work given.
Now to those at the office, you would presume people at the office would not be as free to watch the world cup ? you're wrong. Many people at the office actually make time out of their hectic scedules to watch the world cup 2010 matches. Some would even as said, use certain resources like internet to check out the latest updates on the world cup 2010 at work, resulting in poor effectiveness and productivity in their work. Not being able to concentrate on their work. During lunch breaks and such, they could also check out the updates when they should be having their meals.
What about those who actually stay up?
die.confirm.
they are actually worse than students at school.one day of work is already tiring enough, adding on the lack of sleep is seriously going to kill you.working for 9 hours is already very tiring.
Those who want to watch are unfortunately unable to. Your health and your work should come first, even though you should relax and have fun sometimes, it shouldn't happen too many times. check out for those important matches and you could watch them.If you want to check out the updates, check out after your work or your school, don't check it in between your work, school hours. it's just not cool.
If you want to watch the match, make sure you get enough sleep too. Even before the match try to get some shut eye and wake up for the match. That way you wouldn't have to drag your feet to work or school.
